Walk-on Passenger Ferry Conditions of Travel

Conditions of travel on Translink services

The issue and use of Translink tickets (including smart cards) and tokens are subject to the Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 and the Translink conditions of travel.

All Translink tickets remain the property of Translink and are not transferable from one customer to another, unless otherwise stated.

The following are examples of passenger conduct which may constitute a breach of a provision of the
Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 and to which penalties will apply. This list is not
exhaustive and other conditions apply.

  • A passenger must be in possession of a valid ticket or token for the entire journey.
  • A passenger must not evade or attempt to evade paying the required fare for the intended journey.
  • A concession ticket or token holder must carry evidence of a concession entitlement, for example, a valid concession entitlement card.
  • A person must produce evidence of a concession entitlement to purchase a ticket at a concession rate.
  • A passenger must produce a ticket or token and/or evidence of a concession entitlement when requested to do so by ferry staff, or an Authorised Person.
  • A person must supply the person’s name, address and age to an Authorised Person when requested where the person is committing or reasonably suspected of committing an offence.
  • Where a passenger 15 years or older is requested to produce evidence of concession entitlement that does not contain a photograph of the person, then the passenger must produce additional evidence to verify identity.

Passengers must not:

  • create a nuisance or disturbance on a public passenger ferry.
  • interfere with a public passenger ferry, service equipment, or a public passenger service.
  • smoke (including electronic cigarettes and vapes) on/in a public passenger ferry or on/at public passenger infrastructure including public transport waiting points.
  • obstruct an Authorised Person in the exercise of a power.
  • consume food or drink on a public passenger ferry, including alcohol.
  • bring animals on a public passenger ferry, unless
    • it is an appropriately trained guide, hearing, or assistance animal, or
    • it is permitted under certain conditions by ferry staff.
  • play musical instruments or operate sound equipment on a public passenger ferry at a level which is likely to cause a nuisance or discomfort to other passengers on a public passenger ferry.
  • place their feet on seats or occupy more than one seat.
  • bring on to public passenger ferries excessive amounts of luggage or large items such as trolleys exceeding 65cm x 65cm (e.g., beach trolleys). Carriage of other items such as bicycles or e-scooters may be restricted by ferry staff for operational and safety reasons.
  • bring any dangerous goods on to a public passenger ferry such as gas bottles or fuel containers (irrespective of whether they are empty or full).
  • put anything in the aisles or walkways that is likely to cause an obstruction or injury to someone.
  • spit on a public passenger ferry and public transport infrastructure.

Amity Trader, reserves the right to apply and enforce additional freight and carriage rules at their discretion on public passenger ferry services.

Please note: the examples above apply to public transport infrastructure.

 

General Safety Requirements

In the interest of passenger safety, freight restrictions apply on all passenger ferries.

Passengers are only permitted to bring on board what they can comfortably and safely carry in a single boarding. Multiple boardings of the ferry are not permitted to load items of any description, including shopping.

All freight transported on ferries is at the owner's risk. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Amity Trader takes no responsibility for loss or damage to freight. Amity Trader employees are not responsible for the delivery or collection of freight.

Freight quantities are limited and Amity Trader reserves the right to refuse the carriage of any freight items when the designated freight area is full, and/or the safety and comfort of passengers or crew could be at risk.

Items Not Permitted Onboard

The following items are not permitted on passenger ferries:

  • Dangerous goods (permitted on vehicle barge only)
  • Furniture (excluding flat-pack furniture on compliant trolleys)
  • Glass panels, large fish tanks, windows, unwrapped mirrors or picture frames
  • Large furniture including lounge chairs and beds
  • Whitegoods, air conditioners, and hot water systems
  • Televisions larger than 53 cm
  • Carpet rolls or building materials exceeding 2.0 m in length and 20 cm in diameter
  • Large building materials or items
  • Livestock
  • Beach trolleys (including folded)
  • Wheelie bins greater than 120 L or exceeding 65 cm x 65 cm
  • Lawn mowers and large petrol or diesel machinery
  • Large car parts (including bumpers, windows, doors, panels) and motorbikes
  • Engines (including outboard motors)
  • Golf carts or buggies
  • Jerry cans, gas bottles, and welding cylinders (empty or full)
Permitted Items and Conditions
3.1 Trolleys
  • Must not exceed 65 cm x 65 cm (including wheels and contents)
  • Contents must not exceed trolley height
3.2 Bicycles
  • Permitted only when vehicle barge operations has ceased and space is available
  • Maximum of 2 bicycles per ferry, subject to space availability
  • Carriage is at the discretion of the vessel Master
3.3 E-Scooters
  • Must be stored on the aft deck
  • Maximum of 3 E-Scooters per ferry, subject to space availability
  • Carriage is at the discretion of the vessel Master
3.4 Wheelchairs and Mobility Aids

To be accepted onboard, mobility devices must:

  • Have a maximum height of 150 cm
  • Have a maximum width of 75 cm
  • Fit within an allocated space of 130 cm by 80 cm
  • Be able to turn 180 degrees within an area of 207 cm by 154 cm
  • Cross a gap of up to 4 cm
  • Climb a 1:14 gradient unassisted
  • Climb a 1:4 gradient with assistance
  • Have an effective braking system
  • Allow safe transfer to a seat if required
  • Be battery operated only
  • Have batteries secured in a vented, protective container
  • The powered mobility device must only be operated by the registered operator of the device, with a doctor’s certificate stating that due to severe impairment they have a need to use the device for assisted travel. The operator must also be capable of safely operating the device.
3.5 Prams and Strollers
  • Permitted only when used for transporting children
3.6 Televisions
  • Flat screen only
  • Maximum size 53 cm
  • Must be boxed or securely wrapped
3.7 Small Electrical Items and Machinery
  • Items such as microwaves, tools, and appliances
  • Petrol or diesel driven items / machinery e.g., chainsaws, whipper snippers – empty of fuel and in new or good condition
3.8 Tyres and Wheels
  • Limited to one item only
  • Must be transported and secured on a compliant trolley and must not exceed trolley dimensions of 65cm x 65cm
3.9 Tiles and Paint
  • Must be carried in a single boarding or via trolley
  • Dangerous goods are not permitted onboard (e.g. Oil Based Paints, Thinners, Turpentine)
3.10 Dogs
  • All dogs must be muzzled and, on a lead, or caged in a suitable pet carrier
  • Dog owners must always carry a dog waste (poo) bag and clean up any mess made by their dog
  • The Ferry Master may not allow a dog onboard if:
    • the dog is considered unsuitable
    • there are too many dogs onboard
    • there are capacity/space restrictions
    • if a school service is running.
  • Dogs may be refused if wet, smelly, sandy or in any condition that may offend other passengers
